Policyholder app usage grew 3.4×
Company overview
Anchor Mutual is a P&C insurer with 1.4M policyholders across auto, home, and umbrella lines. The mobile app was originally built for claims; outside of an incident, customers had zero reason to open it.
The business problem
Average sessions per policyholder per year sat at 1.1, almost all triggered by claims. Cross-sell rates were 9% — well below industry top-quartile — and behavioral data was so sparse that pricing models leaned heavily on demographic proxies.
Strategic analysis
Insurance suffers from the 'invisible product' problem: customers pay monthly but feel no value until a loss event. Behavioral economics offers a path: convert risk-reduction behavior into a visible, rewardable game. The opportunity was double-sided — better engagement AND better underwriting signal.
Gamification solution
A behavioral engagement system with four pillars: driving-safety quests with telematics integration, home-resilience missions (smoke-detector tests, water-shutoff drills), a transparent Risk Score status game, and premium-credit rewards (up to 12%) for sustained healthy behavior.
Implementation process
A 16-week rollout starting with auto-only telematics quests, then expanding to home, then introducing the unified Risk Score. Underwriting and actuarial teams co-designed the credit structure to keep the program loss-ratio neutral while rewarding genuinely lower-risk behaviors.
Results
Annual app sessions rose 3.4×. Cross-sell rate climbed from 9% to 12.7%. Claim frequency dropped 12% in the engaged cohort, materially improving combined ratio in pilot states.
